Dear Mama

…Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place…

There’s no way I can pay you back

But the plan is to show you that I understand

You are appreciated

What does it mean to be a mom?  What would you like to say today, if you could, to the mother who helped bring you to life? In one word describe your mother?

These are just some of the questions that I posed to 6 amazing individuals as part of my ongoing celebration of Mother’s Day and series on What does…(which I will explain more of in a later blog)

6 individuals  from different walks in life told me what they thought it means to be a mom, while also sharing their message to their mothers/learned lesson, and clearing up possible misconceptions about mothering.

Wydnyr Richardson, Nurse Manager

Q:  What does it mean to be a mom?

A:   Being a mom is like receiving the greatest and most rewarding job.  It is lots of responsibilities and love.

Q: What would you like to say today, if you could, to the mother who helped bring you to life?

A: Thank you for absolutely everything.  Thank you for the love.  Thank you for the understanding.  Thank you for the spankings….thank you for believing in me when I didn’t even believe in myself.

Q: In one word describe your mother?

A:  Unselfish.

Q: Are there any misconceptions about mothering that you want cleared up?

A:  Sometimes mothers think you need to lose yourself to be a mom.  Instead you find yourself and have a better understanding of who you are.

Q: What big lesson about life and its many wonders has your mother taught you?

A:  Now I’m translating…When the difficult times come you need to tie your belt on your waste and keep moving forward.  Second lesson if I may give one was told to me as I was giving birth and that is to be quiet and push.  So much of that three word lesson can be carried on to different parts of life.

Trish Croft, Doctor to Be

Q: What would you like to say today, if you could, to the mother who helped bring you to life?

Q: In one word describe your mother?

A:  love.

Q: Are there any misconceptions about mothering that you want cleared up?

A:  It’s not one of the easiest jobs like some people say.  It’s a wow job that some, like stay at home moms, are not given enough credit for.  As a teacher and a coach I spend 17 hours at times with my students and they are in some ways like my children.  It takes great patience, understanding, and methods of coping when the mood swings come to do what I do and I’m not even a parent yet.

Q: What big lesson about life and its many wonders has your mother taught you?

A:  Anything in life you want, you can have, you just have to work hard for it.

Q: What would you like to say today, if you could, to the mother who helped bring you to life?

A: I would say thank you first.  Thank you for being there and for providing for me and my siblings.  Thank you for clothing me and thank you for just being a mom.

Q: In one word describe your mother?

A:  Easy-going.

Q: Are there any misconceptions about mothering that you want cleared up?

A:  Not that I know of.

Q: What big lesson about life and its many wonders has your mother taught you?

A:  I was taught not to get in trouble with the law.

Q: In one word describe your mother?

A:  Phenomenal.

Q: Are there any misconceptions about mothering that you want cleared up?

A:  People judge young moms especially if they choose to go out as if they can’t do that.  But I think you have to love yourself before you love someone else.  It’s okay to have space from your child to do the things that you love.  If you don’t love yourself you can’t be there to love somebody else.

Q: What would you like to say today, if you could, to the mother who helped bring you to life?

A:  Irreplaceable.
