How to Declutter your Things and your Life?

Letting go is never an easy thing to do.  Many people, like me, at one point in time have found it difficult to let go of people, and things, especially.  We tend to hold on to things and to people who no longer purpose our lives just because it or they once dictated our actions, was a part of some transition in our lives, or has just always been there for as long as we could remember it.  To better illustrate things, I have created a false character to embody some of the many reasons why we can find it difficult to let go.  Susie Q. is a Colonel in the US Army and she is finding great difficulty in letting go of a broken alarm clock.  The reasons behind her hesitation or difficulty are as follows: the alarm clock has been around since she was in basic training; it once dictated to her when she would get up every morning; it was a part of her transition from civilian to military life.

Sometimes there can be a multitude of reasons, like in Susie Q.’s instance, as to why we find it hard to let go of one item.  We have to find the courage to persevere through those reasons and to ask ourselves a really important question; what do we really need.  Did Susie Q. really need a broken clock that no longer served its purpose in her life?

If we journey together and consider 10 creative ways to declutter our home, then we will find the answer to Susie Q. and many others question.

  1. Get rid of 1 item per day
  2. Get one trash bag and fill it up with things you plan to give away or get rid of
  3. Make a list of places/areas to declutter
  4. Try the 12-12-12 challenge

12 items to throw away

12 items to donate

12 items to put back in place

  1. Get rid of just in case items – chances are you will never find purpose for them…so let it go
  2. Use your imagination – get creative and try from what you know something different
  3. Take stock of your daily life and see what would work for you – not everything you will read about decluttering your things and life will work for you. Experiment and find what works.
  4. Give yourself permission to let go
  5. Compromise – if you find that you come across an item that you just cannot do without, find a way to repurpose it so that it has new found meaning to you and your space.
  6. Ask yourself, “Do my clothes and clutter honor who I am?” – If you cannot answer that question honestly, revisit steps 1 and 2.

In this day in age of built it alarm clocks in phones we see that Susie Q. did not need the alarm clock, but because of its sentiment she could through compromise, repurpose the alarm clock.  She could do one of two things.  Get the alarm clock fixed if it was economical enough to do so, or to take a picture before getting rid of the alarm clock and to create from the photo an art piece that could be mantled to her office wall.

I hope you have found these tips and this article to be helpful.  May you find what it is you need in life and learn to live by it.

Until next time,

Take care and be true.
